Abstract

Printed self-learning material is not simply classroom content transferred to paper. It is an instructional interface expected to explain, guide practice, elicit evidence, and support correction when the teacher is not physically present. This methodological review converts established instructional-design principles and Philippine continuity guidance into a build-test-revise protocol. Four forms of validity are distinguished: curricular accuracy, instructional coherence, learner usability, and production reliability. Expert review is necessary for the first two but cannot substitute for observation of learners using the material. The proposed workflow begins with a competency map, proceeds through prototype and cognitive tryout, and ends with print inspection, controlled release, error logging, and version management. The article also identifies common validation errors, including reliance on global mean ratings, validators with indistinguishable roles, and claims of effectiveness made without learner-outcome evidence. The result is a practical quality-assurance model rather than an evaluation of a particular module.
